With one more match left to play, Spanish club Real Madrid won its 34th La Liga title by defeating Villarreal 2-1 at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium in Madrid, Spain. With this win, they now have an unassailable seven-point lead over Barcelona, the second-placed club.

Both the goals were scored by striker Karim Benzema, who has now scored a total of 21 goals, just behind 23 scored by Lionel Messi of Barcelona.

While Vicente Iborra did score a goal in the 83rd minute, it was too late for Villarreal to repair the damage.

Due to the coronavirus restrictions, the match at the 6,000-seat capacity stadium was played without an audience.

This was Real’s first La Liga title since 2017, and also the first since the departure of ace player Cristiano Ronaldo.

With this win, manager Zinedine Zidane’s team has won all the 10 matches that it has played since the resumption of the Spanish football season in June 2020, after the coronavirus pandemic resulted in a three-month break.

“This is better than anything. It takes a tremendous effort to win La Liga,” said Zidane, the Real Madrid boss, for whom this is the 11th title as the manager of the club.

“After 38 matches, you have more points than anyone else. After lockdown and everything, it’s astonishing.”

Rivals Barcelona also congratulated Real on their fantastic win on social media.

“It has been a strange season but our objective was very clear once the league restarted,” said captain Sergio Ramos after the win.

“We wanted to win every game. This is the reward for all our hard work. 34 leagues, my fifth title.”

He also attributed the success to the manager saying, “Zidane has been key, he is the captain of the ship and led us from the start of the season – we have always felt protected with Zizou. He is a unique coach.”

Many congratulations to Team Read Madrid!
