The Tokyo Olympics is setting a precedent by trying to recycle and reuse. As the country prepares for the mega sporting event slated to be held in 2020, Japanese authorities are going all out to ensure that the games are held in the most environment-friendly manner.
To achieve this, they are recycling and reusing as much as possible. For instance, the medals are being made using recycled material. The Tokyo 2020 Medal Project is aimed at manufacturing medals by using electronics goods such as mobile phones. The Organizing Committee for the games plans to make around 5,000 gold, silver and bronze medals for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in this manner.
Another thing to be made using recycled material is the Olympic torch. The authorities are making use of the metal from the Fukushima earthquake for this purpose. The aluminium from the temporary shelters that were made for the earthquake victims is being repurposed for the torches.
Furthering the ‘green’ agenda, the organisers also want to power the entire event using renewable sources of energy such as wind and sun. Even the goods used in the games will be recycled or reused and will be sourced through sustainable sources.
