The world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium located in Ahmedabad in the Indian state of Gujarat is hosting its first international cricket match currently.

Also popularly known as the Motera Stadium, the ground has a capacity of seating 1,32,000 audience, surpassing the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which has a capacity of 90,000. The mammoth stadium also boasts of having 11 centre pitches on the main ground. It also has 6 indoor pitches with bowling machines and 4 dressing rooms.

Apart from this, the stadium also features an built-in clubhouse with 55 rooms and features restaurants, an Olympic size swimming pool, gym, and a 3D projector theatre.

Spread across a whopping 63 acres, Narendra Modi Stadium is also the first stadium in India that is fitted with LED lights.

It has been named after the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi as he had conceptualized this stadium when he was serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association.

“We’re proud to have the biggest cricket stadium in the world. The infrastructure is very good and we’re all really excited to play here,” Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli had said in his press conference.

“Not just for cricket but it’s a proud moment for India. Besides being the largest cricket stadium, it’s also one of the most modern stadiums in the world,” Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said.

The stadium is currently hosting the pink-ball Test between India and England.

The President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tweeted ahead of the match:

Will miss being at the stadium today ..what an effort it must have been to create this ..pink test was our dream and it’s going be the 2nd one in india.hope to see full stands like last time.
