The famous rock band Coldplay needs no introduction – its music has enthralled music lovers for decades now. Apart from its brilliant music, the band is also known for its philanthropic and humanitarian initiatives.

And now, the band has once again proved its love for the environment by collaborating with The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization that is developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. Coldplay has sponsored a machine called Interceptor 005, or Neon Moon 1, which will be deployed in Malaysia to clean up the most polluting rivers in specific locations in the area.

Now, Neon Moon 1 is under construction at Konecranes’ MHE-Demag facility in Malaysia. According to The Ocean Cleanup, it is one of the first two Interceptors produced for series production and the first of the third-generation design. The machine is expected to be completed in late Spring of 2021 and once done, it will be deployed to clean up the rivers by removing huge amounts of wastes.

Since 2019, The Ocean Cleanup has announced the use of these Interceptor solutions to clean up heavily polluting waterways in countries around the world, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, the United States of America, Jamaica, and Thailand.

“Without action, there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050, which is why The Ocean Cleanup’s work is so vital. We’re proud to sponsor Interceptor 005 – aka Neon Moon 1 – which will catch thousands of tons of waste before it reaches the ocean,” said Coldplay on the sponsorship of Interceptor 005.

What is The Ocean Cleanup?
The Ocean Cleanup is an non-profit organization started by Boyan Slat in 2013 in his hometown of Delft in the Netherlands. Headquartered in Rotterdam, the organization consists of more than 90 engineers, researchers, scientists and computational modelers working daily to clean the world’s oceans of plastic and make the Earth cleaner and greener by creating advanced technology. The goal of the organization is to clean up 90 per cent of the floating ocean plastic pollution.

Isn’t this an amazing step by Coldplay? We wish The Ocean Cleanup all the very best for this initiative to clean up rivers.
