A retirement village in Singapore has bagged the “World Building of the Year” title. The title was bestowed at the recently concluded 2018 World Architecture Festival to the Kampung Admiralty retirement complex.
Described as the “club sandwich” due to its layered design, the building complex won because of its approach to provide modern facilities while utilizing natural resources judiciously. The complex is equipped with facilities such as a medical centre, shopping centre, restaurants, and childcare centres. However, it also makes use of natural resources like sunlight, natural ventilation, and rainwater harvesting to reduce the building’s energy use. The numerous plants and trees in the complex provide the much-needed green cover making it a sight to behold. The complex is a great example of how development can go hand in hand with the protection of the environment.
In today’s times when green cover is steadfastly being replaced by concrete jungles, the need to “go green” is paramount, and the Kampung Admiralty can serve as a perfect model for others to follow.
