Since 1992, the United Nations has annually observed December 3 as the ‘International Day of Disability’. This day is observed to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all spheres. Further, it aims to increase awareness of the situations of persons with disabilities in every facet of society.

Disability Day is not only limited to mental or physical disabilities but also encompasses other known disabilities like Autism, Down’s Syndrome, and Multiple Sclerosis.

According to the UN, the 2030 agenda pledges to “leave no one behind” in the context of damage risk reduction and humanitarian action. Governments and private organisations need to work as a team towards eradicating the typical social norms attached to people with disability and achieve sustainable development goals. The theme for 2018 plainly focuses on empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality as part of the 2030 Agenda.

So, let’s reaffirm our commitment to care and respect for everyone who is specially-abled and empower them for an inclusive society this International Disability Day.
