World Bicycle Day is observed on 3rd June each year to highlight the importance of the bicycle as a simple, affordable, and environmentally sustainable means of transport.

This day also seeks to reinforce the importance of the bicycle as a means “of fostering sustainable development, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health, preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace.”

What are the benefits of cycling?

The physical, mental, and environmental benefits of cycling are many. Here are a few of them:

It is a great form of exercise for the muscles

When cycling and pedaling, one uses all the major muscles groups, providing the much-needed exercise for all the muscles of the body.

It builds overall health

The overall salutary effects of cycling are manifold – it results in increased cardiovascular health, decreased body fat levels, reduced stress levels, and less anxiety and depression.

It builds stamina

Without a doubt, cycling builds in much stamina, strength, and endurance.

It is environmental-friendly

Apart from the health benefits, cycling is an environmental-friendly and sustainable way of transport. The sedentary time that you spend in a car, bus, or a tram can easily be replaced by cycling!
