One of the leading beauty company, L’Oreal recently announced that by 2030, 95 per cent of the ingredients for its beauty products will be derived from renewable plant sources, abundant minerals, or circular processes. It also pledged that 100 per cent of formulas used to make its cosmetic products will be respectful of the aquatic environment, doing no harm to the diversity of coastal and freshwater aquatic ecosystem.
This move comes at a time when the demand for organic and environmentally-friendly cosmetics has been growing abundantly and when safe and healthy goods are being preferred by the masses.
This initiative is being put in place by adopting the ‘Green Sciences’ approach, which enables the sustainable cultivation of ingredients and extracts the best that nature has to offer through cutting-edge technological processes.
L’Oreal, which owns around 36 brands including Maybelline and Lancome, to date, 80 per cent of the company’s raw materials are biodegradable, 59 per cent are renewable, 34 percent are natural or of natural origin, and 29 per cent of the ingredients used in L’Oréal formulas are developed according to the principles of green chemistry.
According to Nicolas Hieronimus, L’Oréal Deputy Chief Executive Officer, in charge of Divisions: “With Green Sciences we are entering a new chapter for L’Oréal Research & Innovation, which has been a key driving force behind the company since its creation. Our ambition is that by 2030 we will be able to offer women and men around the world increasingly effective, safe cosmetics that respect the environment.”
“We decided it was the right moment to do this as there has been a lot of scientific progress,” said Laurent Gilbert, director of sustainable innovation at L’Oreal.
