In a fantastic move to promote inclusivity, the Miss France contest is now open to transgender contestants too.

In a recent interview with the local newspaper Le Parisien, the director of the pageant and a former Miss France, Sylvie Tellier said that the new rules would no longer require contestants to fill the otherwise mandatory requirement of being assigned female at birth. Now, the rules just require a contestant to be a woman between the age of 18 and 25 and furnish proof for the same.

Miss France is a widely popular program in France, with over 7 million viewers. It is broadcast in December each year on TF1 channel, the most-watched TV channel in France.

With this move, France has followed the footsteps of a few other European nations that have allowed transgender contestants. In 2018, Angela Ponce won the Miss Spain title and became the first transgender woman to compete for the Miss Universe pageant. Earlier, in 2015, Céline Van Den Bossche, a transgender contestant competed in the Miss Belgium pageant.
