Noted antiquities collector and art dealer Forrest Fenn has confirmed that a treasure chest replete with gold, gems, jewels, and other valuable items that he had hidden in the Rocky Mountains more than a decade ago has finally been found. The treasure is estimated to be worth a whopping $1 million.
“It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago,” Mr Fenn, an 89-year-old millionaire from New Mexico, said in a statement.
The seeker of the treasure wishes to remain anonymous and has not come forward. However, Fenn confirmed that he is from “back East.” The finding was confirmed through the seeker by means of a photograph.
Fenn also said that a 24-line poem in his autobiography ‘The Thrill of the Chase’, published in 2010, had led the man to the exact location of the hidden treasure.
The treasure hidden by Fenn became a sensation among people, with thousands embarking on the journey to get rich. However, not many were able to find the right location.
Fenn believes as many as 350,000 people from across the world have tried their hands to find the treasure. Quite a few among them quit their jobs and some also, unfortunately, died in the process.
Asked how he felt about the treasure being found, Fenn said, “I don’t know, I feel halfway kind of glad, halfway kind of sad because the chase is over.”
“I congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the search and hope they will continue to be drawn by the promise of other discoveries,” Fenn said on his website.
