Facebook recently announced that on New Year’s Eve 2020, a record 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made on WhatsApp globally. This is a record for the most number of calls made on a single day on the messaging and calling platform owned by Facebook.

This was also a 50 per cent increase in the number of calls made on WhatsApp on the same day last year.

Facebook shared these details on a blog titled ‘Facebook’s Apps Helped People Celebrate the New Year Together, Even When Apart.’

“In 2020, people turned to technology to stay in touch and get things done in the face of social distancing and stay-at-home mandates, and video calling became arguably the most in-demand feature. At Facebook, we saw surges in video chatting all year across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp, and last night was no exception. New Year’s Eve is a historically busy night for our services, but this year set new records,” the blog said.

Details about Instagram, another app owned by Facebook, were also shared: more than 55 million live broadcasts across Facebook and Instagram occurred globally on New Year’s Eve.

Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014 whereas it purchased Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion.

This fact shows that technology has helped us connect to our near and dear ones. Do you agree?
