Japan’s Toyota has reclaimed its title as the world’s best-selling automaker after a gap of five years!
In the latest data released, Toyota sold around 9.528 million vehicles in 2020, surpassing Germany’s Volkswagen that sold around 9.305 million units.
The last time Toyota held the crown of the world’s largest automaker was in 2015, after which Volkswagen topped the rating for four consecutive years.
Toyota’s status was boosted due to multiple factors, the primary of which is that its home market Japan and Asian nations have been less impacted by the pandemic than their European and American counterparts.
However, this does not mean that the automobile industry is out of trouble: the coronavirus pandemic has dwindled the sales of cars to a large extent. Lockdowns have served as a deterrent to people from visiting showrooms and a number of manufacturing plants have closed down. Toyota deliveries dwindled11.3% in 2020 compared to the previous year, while Volkswagen saw a decrease of 15.2%.
“Our focus is not on what our ranking may be, but on serving our customers” a Toyota spokeswoman said about the company topping the list of the largest selling car maker.
Headquartered in Toyota, Aichi, Japan, Toyota produces vehicles under five brands, including the Toyota brand, Hino, Lexus, Ranz, and Daihatsu.
