Jon Escueta, hence launched an initiative to boost the self-esteem of his young customers by encouraging them to read aloud while getting their hair cut. He started the program last year when he offered $3, a free book and a piece of candy to children who read with undivided attention.

Escueta, a former youth Basketball coach, told WFMZ-TV, “ We have kids who come in and want to read no problem, but it’s the shy kids that will make a little bit of difference in their lives.”

Once launched, the initiative picked up speed and drew interest from all over. Jon Escueta’s Facebook page now averagely receives a million views prompting children’s book authors to reach out to him for collaborations. He is asked to keep the latest editions of their books in his shop.

Escueta really hopes that the other barber shops in the city adopt this initiative too.
