A huge mural of Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, 60-foot tall and 30-foot wide, stared down from San Francisco just hours after the activist left the United States of America by boat. She is now headed to Madrid in Spain for a United Nations climate change summit to be held in December.
The portrait of Thunberg has been made by Argentine street artist Andres Petreselli, who signs his work as Cobre. He said he made the mural to remind all people of the threats that climate change poses to humanity.
Petreselli admitted that this portrait was atypical of his work because he generally does not touch upon political or religious issues. But this one is certainly different.
“But, this one is … I feel connected with the politics behind (it) because I think it is real and if I have to compare it with the rest of my murals, this is the most political one that I ever made,” he said.
The work was funded by OneAtmosphere.org, a San Francisco based non-profit organization that works towards combating climate change. The Executive Director of the OneAtmosphere.org, Paul Scott said that he hoped that people who saw the mural would be “touched” by the image of Thunberg, who has played a huge role in making people aware of the detrimental effects of global warming.
“We are really just hoping that it stops and makes them think, that this will amplify Greta’s message, that people will start to understand the clear call for action that she is sending out,” Scott said.
It is little steps that contribute towards a massive change. Let’s join hands and work towards fighting against this global threat.
