Music legend Sir Elton John has been honored by the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom on a £1,000 gold coin to commemorate his career of more than 50 years and celebrate his musical legacy.

Born on 25th March 1947 as Reginald Dwight, Elton John is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. One of the most revered, renowned, and respected artists ever, he is also the recipient of five Grammy Awards and two Academy Awards. A global sensation, he has performed in over 80 countries across the world.

Created by Norwich-born artist Bradley Morgan Johnson, the coin features the legend wearing his famous music-note glasses and straw boater’s hat with a Union flag in the background.

The coins are of different values ranging from £5 selling for £13 while a one-kilo gold proof coin has a face value of £1,000, although it is priced at £68,865. The coins are available in gold, silver, and other non-precious metals.

“It really is a fabulous honour to be recognised in this way,” said Sir Elton.

“The last few years have contained some of the most memorable moments of my career, and this is another truly humbling milestone on my journey.”

In 2020, the Royal Mint UK embarked on a journey of celebrating some of the most important artist of the nation, and the collection would certainly be incomplete without the inclusion of Elton John. In January 2020, the rock band Queen were the first to be commemorated in this series.

Royal Mint’s Clare Maclennan said in a BBC report, “Elton John is without a doubt a British music legend and is recognised as one of the most successful singer-songwriters of his generation. We are delighted to honour Elton’s significant contribution to British music on a UK coin.”
