Meet Major Biden, the first rescue dog in the White House

Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on 20th January 2021. And along with Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, two other of his family arrived at the White House – Major and Champ.

A German Shepard, Major is the first rescue dog ever to live in the White House. He was adopted by the Bidens in November 2018 from the Delaware Humane Association. Interestingly, the group also hosted an online “indoguration” fundraiser on 17th January to celebrate Major’s move into the White House.

Champ, again a German Shepard, was bought by the Bidens from a breeder in Pennsylvania in 2008.

Joe Biden is known to be an animal lover and uploads photos of his dogs on his social media account regularly.

“Some Americans celebrate #NationalCatDay, some celebrate #NationalDogDay,” he wrote in a tweet earlier. “President Trump celebrates neither. It says a lot. It’s time we put a pet back in the White House.”

The tradition of presidential pets goes way back to the first President of the United States, George Washington. Since then, a majority of the Presidents have owned pet. Donald Trump was the first President in more than a decade to not own one.

Before Major and Champ, the White House also served as home to the Obama’s two Portuguese water dogs Bo and Sunny.
