Awestruck Australians watched as a meteor exploded in the skies in Melbourne on Valentine’s Day.

Videos of this breathtaking and dramatic sight have been captured and shared widely on social media, showing the meteor disintegrating. This rare event caused quite a bit of a stir online with many sharing their experiences of witnessing this beautiful occurrence.

Travelling at a speed of 40 kilometres/second, the rock threw in some extra romance for Melbournians on Valentine’s Day, who are facing a lockdown due to the soaring cases of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Outside sort of lit up. Out the corner of my eye I thought it was lightning,” Josh O’Neil, 24, a resident from Korumburra in South Gippsland Victoria told 7NEWS.com.au

He said he saw a “big green light, just going through the sky, then it exploded”.

Another person who witnessed this gorgeous sight said that it was the most beautiful set of colours that he had ever seen.

Have a look at the video yourself and let us know what you think of it.
