The winners of the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards 2020 have been announced! And the winning photographs are breathtaking, to say in the least.

One of the largest and renowned photography awards in the world, the Sony World Photography Awards this year saw more than 345,000 photographs submitted from photographers of over 200 nations in the world. The awards are generally given away in four categories: Professional, Open, Youth, and Student.

The ‘Photographer of the Year’ Award was awarded to Pablo Albarenga from Uruguay for his awe-inspiring work on indigenous communities in Latin America. His work ‘Seeds of Resistance’ explores photographs of how activists are fighting to save their territories from the dangers of mining, deforestation, and agribusiness.

In these stunning aerial photographs, the activists are pictured from above, which seems as though they are laying their lives for their lands.

The Open Photographer of the Year was awarded to Tom Oldham from the United Kingdom, who captured a black and white portrait of Black Francis, the frontman of the rock band Pixies. When asked by Tom to express his frustration with photoshoots, Francis showed a perfect gesture of annoyance by digging his hands in his face.

The Youth Photographer of the Year was awarded to 19-year-old Hsien-Pang Hsieh from Taiwan, who captured a street performer that is apparently walking in a hurry but, in reality, is standing still.

The Student Photographer of the Year was awarded to Ioanna Skellaraki of Greece representing the Royal College of Art for her series Aeiforia. The series present magnificent night-time photographs of wind turbines and solar panels used across the island of Tilos in Greece, focusing on the issue of sustainability.
